Can You Upload a Video to ChatGPT? What Works on iPhone, Android and Desktop

Sort of. ChatGPT takes files up to 512 MB, but video isn't on OpenAI's list of supported file types; that list covers documents, spreadsheets, presentations and text. So uploading an MP4 depends on your plan and app version, and even when it goes through, there's no guarantee ChatGPT takes in both what's shown and what's said.

A video link doesn't work at all. Here's what does.

How to upload a video to ChatGPT on iPhone or Android

  1. Get the video onto your phone. Your own clips are already in Photos or Gallery. For someone else's, use the app's download option if there is one, or screen-record it.
  2. Open ChatGPT and tap +.
  3. Pick the video from Photos or Gallery and wait for it to finish uploading.
  4. Add the context the file doesn't carry: the caption, who made it and where it was posted.
  5. Ask your question.

How to upload a video to ChatGPT on desktop

Drag the file into the chat, or click + and choose it from your computer. The same 512 MB limit and the same caveat apply: video isn't a supported file type, so results vary.

Why can't I send a video to ChatGPT?

Usually one of these:

  • It's not a supported file type. Video isn't on the list, so the upload can be refused, or accepted and only partly understood.
  • It's too big. Every file is capped at 512 MB.
  • You've hit the upload limit, which is 80 files every 3 hours, and failed attempts can count toward it.
  • You sent a link. ChatGPT doesn't play the video behind a TikTok, Instagram, YouTube or LinkedIn link.

Can ChatGPT give you a video transcript?

Not reliably. Transcribing an uploaded video isn't a feature OpenAI documents. ChatGPT Record captures meetings and voice notes, not video files. For a social video, it's easier to start from a tool that transcribes it for you.

The faster way: paste the link into Rescroll

  1. Copy the video's link: TikTok, Instagram Reel, YouTube or LinkedIn.
  2. Paste it into Rescroll, on your phone or your computer.
  3. Ask: "Give me the transcript", "Summarize it in five bullets", "What makes this video work?"

No downloading, no file limits, no retyping the caption. Rescroll reads the transcript and what happens on screen, and keeps every video in your library so you can come back to it.

Frequently asked questions

Can I upload a video to ChatGPT? Sometimes. ChatGPT accepts files up to 512 MB, but video isn't on OpenAI's list of supported file types, so whether an MP4 goes through depends on your plan and app version. Even then, there's no guarantee it takes in both what's shown and what's said.

Why can't I send a video to ChatGPT? Usually one of four reasons: video isn't a supported file type, the file is over 512 MB, you've hit the upload limit of 80 files every 3 hours, or you're sending a link. ChatGPT doesn't play videos behind TikTok, Instagram, YouTube or LinkedIn links.

Can I upload a video to ChatGPT and get a transcript? Not reliably. Transcribing an uploaded video isn't a feature OpenAI documents. ChatGPT Record transcribes meetings and voice notes, not video files. Rescroll transcribes the TikTok, Reel, YouTube or LinkedIn videos you paste a link to.

How do I send a video link to AI? Paste it into Rescroll. It works with TikTok, Instagram, YouTube and LinkedIn links, reads the transcript and what's on screen, and lets you chat with the video straight away.
